How Dumpster Weight Limits Work
Understanding tonnage allowances, overage charges and why heavy materials need special containers.
Why weight matters more than volume
Landfills charge by the ton, not by the cubic yard. Your rental price includes a certain number of tons, and anything over that is billed at the landfill's per-ton rate plus a small handling fee. A container can look half-empty and still exceed its allowance if it is full of tile or wet dirt.
Typical allowances
| Container | Included weight (typical) | Legal maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | 1-2 tons | 10 tons (heavy debris) |
| 15 yard | 2 tons | About 5 tons |
| 20 yard | 3 tons | About 5-6 tons |
| 30 yard | 4 tons | About 6-7 tons |
| 40 yard | 5 tons | About 7-8 tons |
Materials that reach the limit fast
- Concrete and brick: about 2 tons per cubic yard
- Dirt and sand: 1.2 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard
- Asphalt shingles: 250-400 lbs per roofing square
- Ceramic tile and plaster: heavy and dense
- Wet debris after rain: water adds significant weight quickly; keep a tarp handy
How we help you avoid overages
We ask about your material when you book, recommend heavy-debris containers where appropriate, and send you the landfill weight ticket with your final invoice so you can see exactly what was disposed. There are no hidden calculations.
